Design

The pen nib is designed to come out with a knock type. And it has a crystal clear body on top with a rubber grip on the bottom. The body itself is entirely transparent, regardless of the ink color, so that the inside ink color can be seen through it. There are no unnecessary decorations, and the design emphasizes the ink colors.

Incidentally, Energel also has a high-end line Pentel Energel Philography. The heavy brass metal body with a Matte finish looks gorgeous.

Ink

Energel Ink

The ink is Pentel’s original “Energel Ink”. It is a water-based gel ink that is very smooth to write with.
The nib has a unique shape, with only the pen tip sticking out in a long, thin line. So we can see our handwriting even while we are writing.

Writing Test

Here is a writing test comparing Pentel Energel Infree with several other companies’ ballpoint pens on LIFE Noble Notebook paper.

No ghosting for writing test

The writing is indeed very smooth, and the nib does not get stuck while writing. The color is also quite good, and each letter is vibrant and easy to read. However, the pen tip with a thickness of 0.4mm is a little less smooth. So if you are looking for a comfortable writing experience, I would recommend 0.5 or 0.7mm thickness.

According to Pentel, Energel Ink dries very quickly even though it is gel ink. But compared to the other oil-based ballpoint pens, we will notice a little bit of smudge when we touch the ink right after writing.

Things I Noticed

Durability of Grip

The grip part gets dirty quickly and is not suitable for long-term use. However, the price is about $2 per unit. So I think the quality is worth the price.

Ink Quantity

To ensure a smooth writing experience, the ink output is quite a lot. In other words, the ink consumption is relatively high. This is probably why the refills are thicker than the ordinary ballpoint pen refills.

Compatibility

The Pentel Energel Infree is also compatible with some other companies’ ballpoint pens made in Japan. We can replace it with the refill of our choice if the size fits. After a quick test, I found that Uni JETSTREAM and Zebra SARARA dry refills fit perfectly.

Where Can We Get Pentel Energel Infree?

I have picked out a few online stores below that sell Pentel Energel Infree with international shipping.

As far as I can tell, Amazon.com doesn’t sell the product per uni but rather in sets of five. On the other hand, Amazon Japan offers Pentel Energel Infree individually at a price even lower than the regular price. See below for instructions on how to order via Amazon Japan using Amazon Global services

Overall Score

radar chart of overall score

Pentel Energel Infree is a gel ink ballpoint pen with a crystal clear body and vibrant & colorful ink. We can write very smoothly with it, and it is definitely worth trying. But as it is reasonably priced, it doesn’t have enough durability for long-term use. But you may buy refills in various colors and use them according to your mood.

Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s tough to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appeal. I must say you have done a excellent job with this. Also, the blog loads super fast for me on Firefox. Excellent Blog!
